A healthy cell membrane allows nutrients in and waste products out. To do its job the cell membrane needs to be malleable and semi-permeable therefore it is made of a double layer of fat. This double layer contains the fat, cholesterol that helps the cell membrane retain its shape. It also contains the fats Omega 6 and Omega 3. While these fats help make up the wall of the cell; they can also be used as substrate to make specific compounds. The cell uses cholesterol as the first ingredient to make hormones. Omega 6 is used to make inflammatory chemicals and Omega 3 is used to make anti-inflammatory chemicals. We need to make inflammation to initiate wound healing - it is essential for survival. However; out of control production of inflammation can damage tissues, which is why we also make anti-inflammatory chemicals using Omega 3 to regulate inflammation production.
We need a mix of each fat in our cell membranes and we need a continuous supply as they are being used up. Therefore you need to include these fats in your diet to ensure the health of your cell membranes and enhance your health. We need to get sufficient Omega 3 in our diet for this reason. Since the highest amount of Omega 3 is found in fatty fish, some individuals may be lacking in this. High quality Omega 3 supplements can help insure we have sufficient production of anti-inflammatory chemicals.
70% of each cell is water so staying hydrated supports your cells. We need to eat quality dietary fat to support our cell membranes which insure our cells get the nutrients they need and their waste products removed. This is a basic fundamental of good health!
